Well, after my 4 part post on all the manual work to move the SharePoint SQL databases to a new server, I found a post from Gary Lapointe, a Microsoft MVP, in a forum today about moving the databases he said:
“This is somewhat of a hack but it’s worked really well for me – use the sql client tools to set up an alias for the database server and set it to point to your new server – then simply move the databases to that server.  This would mean that you wouldn’t have to change any settings within sharepoint and the whole process can be done in just a few minutes (just detach the databases, move them to the new server and attach). ”

I haven’t tried this myself yet, but you can be I’m going to after all the work and headaches from my last attempted move. I’ll keep you posted on how it works….
